The Val Mauria peat bog

The Palù Mauria peat bog spreads over 4 ha in a NNE direction, opposite the village of Danta, at an average altitude of approximately 1,330 m a.s.l.

Near the house from which the site is reached, flourishing nitrophilous communities of Filipendula ulmaria, Crepis paludosa and Cirsium heterophyllum can be found. Equisetum sylvaticum grows in abundance (also in the humid woods in the area).

In the less disturbed and more interesting sector communities can be observed that are dominated by Carex rostrata, or Menyanthes and in particular pools with Carex limosa, Rhynchospora alba, Drosera longifolia, Utricularia minor can be found. These stations are mostly referable to the transition mire habitat (7140).

In a relatively drier environment, also small communities of Carex dioica can be found. Aspects traceable to a low soligenous peat bog on the slopes are Trichophorum alpinum, which is always associated to peat moss, Trichophorum caespitosum and Schoenus ferrugineus, as well as eriophores.

Further downhill, beyond the wood and badly visible, a large reedbed growing also on the slopes constitutes a very interesting element, because, despite the lesser floral variety, it contributes to the pleasant “wilderness” characteristics of the area.
