Safeguard and valorization of peat bogs in Danta di Cadore

Chemical alteration of the water following winter salt spreading

During the winter, in order to stop the formation of ice and assure transitability, mineral salt is spread along the provincial road no. 6, the indispensable road in terms of local mobility linking the village of Danta to the S. Antonio pass junction, and which crosses the central area of the Val di Ciampo peat bog. The snow and ice melted by the salt create a saline solution that tends to flow along the steepest slopes and into the part of the peat bog that lies below the provincial road, with toxic effects on the vegetation and the alteration of the overall ecological balance.

This threat affects around 1.5 ha of peat bog, in one of the most scientifically interesting areas, where the conditions allow for the formation of an intermediate peat bog, with numerous peat moss communities and the presence of botanical species worthy of protection including Utricularia minor, Carex limosa, Carex rostrata, Rhynchospora alba, Drosera longifolia and Drosera obovata (the last three are included in the national “red list”).

The particular morphology of the place makes it necessary to extend the protection intervention also to the uphill side of the road.
