Safeguard and valorization of peat bogs in Danta di Cadore

Invasive expansion of the woodlands

The abandon over time of the grazing and mowing practices in the meadows lying between the peat bogs and the woodlands has led to the progressive expansion of the wood, which today is eroding the open spaces and moving in on the central and most important nuclei of the peat bogs. In addition to the physical detraction of the peat bog surface areas, the encroaching wood may also cause the significant variation of the flora in the site, orienting it towards a lesser naturalistic worth, as the growth of the tree species causes a reduction in the sunlight that reaches the ground and the drastic modification of the pedological characteristics (further acidification of the substratum).

This threat affects all of the peat bogs and the connecting areas between the largest peat sites in different ways and with different intensities.
