The implementation of unsuitably regulated and limited tourism is very harmful to peat sites. The act of walking over humid areas can in fact lead to serious damage of the peat moss structure, altering the naturally slow flow of water and compacting the ground to create weak areas, the expansion of which has a negative impact on the survival of the most valuable plant species in the site, leading to a general decrease in the ecological value of the area.
The careless habitual visiting of the site could also create a threat to the many bird species of particular naturalistic interest that live in the area.
This threat covers the whole project area as far as the disturbance of the bird species is concerned and all the damp areas as far as the walking is concerned (approximately 12 ha). The risk of damage is higher in those areas characterised by a greater scientific and naturalistic value such as the Cercenà peat bog, in which “woody peat bogs” and “active raised bogs” can be found. The sectors of the Val da Ciampo near to the road also appear to be more vulnerable. In Val Mauria, particular protection is required for the most interesting strip with the pools of Drosera and Rhynchospora. |
