The SCI Danta Peat Bogs The SCI (Site of Community Importance) IT3230060 “Danta Peat Bogs” covers an area of approximately 200 hectares, located on the northern boundaries of the Dolomite area, on a promontory that is detached from the Sesto Dolomites group overlooking the Piave valley, and closed to the North-East by the Padola stream and to the South-West by the Ansiei stream. The plateau on the edge of which the village of Danta stands reaches maximum altitude of 1,661 m. In terms of the number of rare species present, the quality of the cenosis and the state of conservation, the Danta peat bog complex, together with that located in the area of Coltrondo in Comelico, represents one of the most important sites in the Veneto Region for its naturalistic, flora and vegetation interest. Its relatively recent discovery (during the 1990s) also leaves room for possible further findings. Within the SCI, different, separate peat biotopes can be found, although they are occasionally linked by a network of impluvia and lesser humid environments. There are three particularly important areas in terms of size and ecological complexity. A fourth peat bog of extraordinary naturalistic value is not included within the SCI perimeter, but in the wider, recently defined ZSP area (IT 3230089 “Cadore and Comelico Dolomites).
